On Sunday 13th January, Neil Wilson, one of our Independent Financial Advisers, and his family ran the East Lancashire Hospice 10K and 2K run, to help raise money for the charity. Neil has written a blog about why they decided as a family to take part in the run, his training and how the family did on the big day!

Neil’s Blog

Within the last couple of years both my wife Rachel and I have taken up running, or to be more accurate jogging/running!! This came about to try to maintain some degree of health and fitness, and to try and combat the arrival of old age!!

For 2019, we set ourselves a family challenge. All 5 of us – myself, Rachel and our three boys would take part in the East Lancashire Hospice 10k race for adults and 2K for race for children on 13th January 2019. Although Rachel ran this race last year, it will be my first race, and the goal is that all 5 of us finish!!!

East Lancashire Hospice

The East Lancashire Hospice provides specialist, supportive and end of life care for patients and their families from Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley. They offer many different services to individuals and their families, who are coping with a life-limiting illness. Over the years having lost family members to life-limiting illnesses this is a cause close to our heart.  https://eastlancshospice.org.uk/

I trained fairly regularly, I managed to get in a couple of 10K runs which took me well over an hour!  However, I did manage to maintain fairly regular 5k runs and thought that this would give me a chance of finishing.

Race Day

On the day the atmosphere was fantastic with over 400 runners taking part.  The 10k race started first, and then the 2k commenced just after. Once the boys had finished their race, they were waiting for Rachel and myself at the finish line, along with friends and family, who were all spurring us on to go faster!

We Did it!

Wow, we did it! 😊😁 All 5 of us completed. Rachel in just over 54 minutes and myself in just over 57 minutes and smashing my training run times, not bad for my first 10k race! The boys successfully completed their 2Ks, and Edward (age 6) was just as impressed with his free chocolate bar as his medal!

East Lancashire Hospice

Thanks so much for all those giving support and sponsorship. We raised approximately £170.00 in total for the East Lancashire Hospice, and despite a few aches and pains afterwards, we all enjoyed the day greatly!

I would highly recommend it to any family wanting to get fit and set themselves a challenge.
