What is Earth Day?
Earth day is April 22nd 2021 and has been celebrated around the world since 1970, with many important events taking place. For example, the Paris Agreement was signed on this date in 2016. Additionally, every year, many local and national events are arranged that aim to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues.
Can you do Good and Make Money?
There has long been an opinion that making money cannot be good for the environment. Think large scale product manufacturing, air pollution caused by oil and gas refineries and the environmental cost of the development of shopping malls and buildings to name but a few. But this is wrong. Did you know that you CAN make money AND do good in the world in the process?
Yes…we are serious. Investors now have more control over where they can invest their money. In the past your investments may have supported tobacco and arms and you might not have realised it. Now, greater transparency means greater control for you, the investor. Here at True Bearing we are proud to have recommended and invested over £25m in the last 2-3 years into a variety of impact, sustainable and ethical investment solutions for our clients.
What is Impact Investing?
Impact Investing is all about investing in businesses or projects that not only create a financial return, but also create a positive, measurable social and environmental impact on the world. It’s about doing good and making money in the process. One such company is McRebur ‘The Plastic Road Company’. MacRebur are a UK based manufacturing company who have developed a new type of surface for roads using waste plastic. Their mission is twofold; to help solve the waste plastic epidemic, and to make road surfaces more durable.
The road to a better world
Their product is made by taking waste plastic (carrier bags, bottles and even nappies!) and breaking it down into small pellets. Next, an activator is added that will help it bind with asphalt. There are a number of benefits to this technology, the primary one being that it reduces the amount of waste plastic going to landfill. Other benefits, according to MacRebur are that the plastic within the asphalt gives better resistance to contraction and expansion due to changes in the weather. This will in turn reduce cracks and potholes. Dare we imagine a world without potholes?! The first roads have now been laid in Cumbria using this new technology. The overall process also reduces the amount of bitumen used in making roads, therefore reducing the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions.
In short, Impact Investments are not only a way of investing in emerging companies with clever ideas about how to change the world, they are a way of contributing to a greener future for all of us.
Any named company is not a recommendation to invest in them
